What is hyaluronidase?
Hyaluronidase is a family of injectable enzymes that act as dispersion agents. It is a substance
that naturally lives within the body and can be duplicated in a laboratory for human resources. They
are used when a client has an adverse reaction to filler and are often referred to as a reversing
agent for hyaluronic acid based fillers. When hyaluronidase is injected into the same tissue that contains
the synthetic hyaluronic acid, it disintegrates the filler through a process called hydrolysis and
leaves the natural hyaluronic
acid intact.
Hyaluronidase encourages the decomposition of hyaluronic acid which lowers its viscosity and
increases the tissues absorbency. When it is used in medicine, hyaluronidase is used with other
drugs given under the skin to improve their uptake by the body. When used in aesthetics,
hyaluronidase effectively reverses the effects of hyaluronic acid when it’s used to “fill” or
“plump” an area by allowing the hyaluronic acid to break down and dissolve.
When hyaluronic acid has been injected into the body, hyaluronidase is great for tweaking its
effects. Injecting hyaluronic acid should be done slowly and cautiously leaving excellent results of
exactly the right amount of filler in exactly the right place. This isn’t always the case though and
injecting filler can turn out imprecise and not as accurate as expected. This is when hyaluronidase
can be used typically to correct, the misplacement of filler, a little too much or too less filler, the
use of the wrong filler or filler affecting blood vessels, muscles and nerves.
